Blue Note: A Story of Modern Jazz (Blu-ray)

A documentary on Blue Note Records, founded in 1939 by German Jewish immigrants Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, who fled Nazi Germany and, with little money, few connections, and limited English, began recording then-unknown musicians on their own judgment. The label went on to define the sound of modern jazz through artists including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, and Sonny Rollins. Combines rare archival footage and concert recordings with interviews including Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, and recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Directed by Julian Benedikt; nominated for a Grammy and won a Peabody Award in 1998.
