William Claxton: Jazzlife

Sale price$100

In 1960, photographer William Claxton and jazz musicologist Joachim E. Berendt traveled across the United States following jazz across social, economic, and racial lines, through concert halls, marching bands, side streets, and subways in New Orleans, New York, St. Louis, Biloxi, Jackson, and beyond. The result documents jazz's regional range and cultural reach, from funeral parades to concert stages, with images of Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Thelonious Monk. Long sought after by collectors, this is a revived edition of Claxton and Berendt's original book. Claxton (1927–2008) began his career shooting jazz record covers and photographed for Life, Paris Match, and Vogue; Berendt (1922–2000) authored "Das Jazzbuch," among the best-selling jazz histories ever published.
