Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child (DVD) Arthouse Films 018

A documentary built around a rare 1986 interview director Tamra Davis, a close friend of Basquiat's, filmed with the artist herself, shelved after his 1988 death and revisited decades later at the encouragement of gallerists at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Crosscuts that footage with new interviews from friends, dealers, and collaborators including Julian Schnabel, Larry Gagosian, Fab 5 Freddy, and Bruno Bischofberger, tracing Basquiat's rise in the Lower East Side art scene, his relationship with Andy Warhol, and his experience navigating fame and racism as a Black artist in a predominantly white field. Premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
