Rothko: An Abstract Humanist (DVD)
An essay-film documentary on the life and work of Mark Rothko, examining how he gave abstraction the emotional force of music and poetry, painting ideas rather than objects. Traces his development from unsold early work and decades teaching children's art classes through his study of Matisse's color, the incorporation and later abandonment of mythological subject matter, and his emergence into a mature style by 1951, placing him among peers Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell. Original French title: "Rothko, un humaniste abstrait." Directed by Isy Morgensztern.
