The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith (DVD)

A documentary built from the archive of former LIFE magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith, who between 1957 and 1965 lived in a dilapidated loft at 821 Sixth Avenue in Manhattan's wholesale flower district and obsessively wired the building for sound, capturing thousands of photographs and endless hours of audio tape of the jazz musicians who gathered there nightly. Documents Thelonious Monk rehearsing for a famous concert, jazz guru Hall Overton, and drummer Ronnie Free's rise and fall in the scene. Directed by WNYC producer Sara Fishko, drawing on interviews with figures including David Amram, Carla Bley, and John Cohen.
